LALI274CALL Course Description

Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL) is the study of all aspects of language learning and teaching with the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This course focuses on the integration of ICT into the language teaching and learning processes. Students will examine a knowledge base that draws upon linguistics, language learning theory, teaching methodology and CALL. The course will introduce students to the use of basic application software packages such as word processing, e-mail, MS Power Point and web page authoring software, Internet resources, sound and video files, CD-ROM software as tools in order to create a computer mediated communication environment and couple that with well designed activities that will stimulate the language learning process. Students will learn how to review, evaluate and incorporate these applications into lessons to enhance learners’ skills. The classes will develop through hands on, task-based assignments, reviews, projects, and presentations. The participants will author individual web sites and use them as the base for all their teaching practice activities and their final project and e-portfolios. On completion of this subject, students should have a solid understanding of modern technology and its impact on L2 learning and teaching. They should also be able to apply this knowledge to TEFL teaching, and the development of electronic materials.
